Mental health is not a political slur

When politics trivialises mental health, everyone suffers. Mental health remains a stark reality, even among children and young adolescents. Recent data indicates that more than one in six people in Malta, roughly 120,000 citizens, live with a mental health condition, with anxiety and depression being the most common.

Research consistently shows that children who are regularly exposed to domestic violence suffer harm even when they are not physically assaulted. Why is it that, very often, the victim and the children are the ones to leave the family unit?

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF

I was born on the 24th August 1964 in St Julian’s. I spent my childhood and youth days in San Gwann.

 

This is my life journey:

  • I was a Franciscan Capuchin Priest. During this time, I was assigned to various roles and responsibilities, amongst which:
     

    • Teacher at De La Salle College 

    • Working with youths at Kalkara Youth Centre 

    • Chaplain at the Correctional Facilities, Kordin 

    • Working with homeless persons at Suret il-Bniedem 

    • Two years of missionary experience in Kenya 

    • Administrator of San Gwann Parish Church and working with youths at the San Gwann Youth Centre

    • Teacher at the University of Malta

  • In 2001, San Gwann Local Council honoured me with ‘Ġieh San Ġwann’.
     

  • Prevention Service Manager – SEDQA
     

  • Chief Executive Office at the Housing Authority
     

  • Administrator and Human Resource Manager – CARITAS, Malta
     

  • Director at EQUAL PARTNERS FOUNDATION – working with children with special needs
     

  • Working with U.Ħ.M., Voice of the Workers
     

  • St Julian’s Deputy Mayor and currently Mayor of the same locality

Graduated in Philosophy, Theology, and Education and have a Licentiate in Social Studies.

 

I am into classical music, art, cooking and love of animals.

 

I am married to Benna Chase and have a son, Adam, step-daughter, Karen, and a dog named Ċikku.

My core values are: the value of life and the environment, inclusion and social justice.
